Aida: My newest music obsession

Aida Broadway Logo

I have always heard of this musical, but never really bothered to listen/go see it because I wasn’t all that interested. But while i was doing work at the library the other day, I decided to finally listen to it. So, I went upstairs, got the CD, checked it out, downloaded to Itunes and gave it a listen. And now I understand why my best friend loves it so much and wonder why the heck didn’t I listen to it earlier?

For those who don’t know, Aida is a 2-act musical based on Giuseppe Verdi’s Italian opera by the same name, with lyrics by Tim Rice, music by Elton John and produced by Disney Theatrical. Like the tragic romance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, The story revolves around the time when Egypt and Nubia are at war. Radames, the Captain of the Egyptian army, is set to be married to the Princess of Egypt, Amneris. But when Aida, the princess of Nubia, is brought to the palace as a slave, everyone’s world is turned upside down and changes their destinies forever.

Adam Pascal and Heather Headley as the two lovers

The show open on March 23,200, starring Adam Pascal, Sherie Rene Scott, and Heather Headley as the title role. It won 4 Tony Awards, including Best Actress in a Musical and Best Original Musical Score. Notable replacements for the show were Idina Menzel and Taylor Dane for Amneris; Will Chase and Patrick Cassidy as Radames; And Michelle Williams, Toni Braxton, and Deborah Cox as Aida .It ran a total of 1,852 performances, closing on Broadway September 4, 2004.

What captivates audiences is the impossible romance between two lovers and the phenomenal music and lyrics for the show. Aida does include humor and action, but the main storyline and music take you on an incredible journey of a woman trying to save her people from slavery, while falling in love with who should be her mortal enemy. The music captures your heart as each song is told as if it comes from the soul of that actor/character her/himself. It leaves you wanting for it to work out, but never knowing if they will ever truly be together.

Deborah Cox and Company

Though it may not be on Broadway anymore, Aida has been performed all of the world, from the Netherlands to Germany, Israel, Japan, and so on and so forth. Many schools have done productions of Aida, still keeping the show alive and favorite for all. If you have not heard/seen this musical, I highly recommend that you do. Get the album or get tickets to the show if it is playing near you. Then you can truly know why Aida is a show that will last a lifetime for all

I saw Aida on Broadway, and it was gorgeous – one of the best shows I’ve seen! The music, the performances, the costumes, the set and the lighting – it all just came together. Thanks for reminding me of it! I should go find that cast recording.
